Last weekend 6 patrols came together at Everton to participate in an epic camping weekend. The District Hardie Webster Camping Competition is an opportunity to demonstrate and learn new skills.
Spending two nights away, camping with Scouts from across the District and working together, they learn team work, time management, preparing and cooking meals and so much more.
On Friday, the self-led patrols set up their campsites. They pitched patrol tents, dining shelters/kitchens & store tents.
Once they’d set up camp they played wide games then had hot chocolate & cake for supper.
On Saturday morning the patrols cooked their own breakfasts and prepared their site for morning inspection.
They were then were given a series of challenges. It was up to them to prioritise how they managed these tasks throughout the day.
These activities included shelter building & making cups of tea using water they’d boiled over a fire.
They also made useful backwoods implements, intruder alarms & demonstrated their knots skills.
A few team puzzles and challenges completed the afternoon activities.
The evening meals they cooked on their fires were a highlight. These included starters , mains and desserts. Menus ranged from chilli & spaghetti bolognese to Jambalaya.
After dinner the patrols presented the camp gadgets that they had built to enhance their sites.
It is fair to say they did extremely well and was great to see such creativity. The evening ended with campfire songs and indoor quick fire team challenges.
Breakfast on Sunday morning was cooked over fires before a final camp inspection. Before packing up, the Patrols had the opportunity to show their own leaders their camp set-ups and have a look around the other patrol sites.
There was a fantastic standard and spirit across all six patrols and we are proud of them all. It was a close competition which was won by a patrol from the 6th. Patrols from the 10th were 2nd & 3rd respectively.
Thank you to Vango for supporting the weekend and the kind provision of head torches to the winning team.
